Frequently asked questions

What is TCM?
Traditional Chinese Medicine [TCM] works to alleviate symptoms by balancing the body energetically, you will find that the TCM diagnostic technique works to treat the individual as a unique entity that is why a different diagnosis may be given to two different people experiencing exactly the same symptoms. Because the individual is treated the symptoms of the disorder are overcome naturally through a balanced and strong body, this is why other disorders in the body often will disappear at the same time.

Can acupuncture help me?
If you are in pain of any kind then pretty much the answer is yes, the clinic was founded on treating conditions resulting in pain. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are extremely successful in the treatment of a multitude of conditions though, from something life threatening like cancer to dark circles around the eyes, you name it it is likely treatable at least to some extent by TCM. Make a call to the clinic to ask more specific questions regarding your condition.

Many people often try Acupuncture and TCM as a "last resort" and find that it can help their serious and complex medical problems when a variety of other treatments could not. Acupuncture is also often used as a preventative medicine. Many people visit J Z Bown for a "tune up" or "balancing" treatment. This can prevent disease and promote health, energy and vitality, and is especialy important to maintain the results achieved from facial rejuvination treatments.

Do the needles hurt?
The needles are rarely felt but sometimes may cause a temporary and slight pricking sensation.
There is no need to associate a fear of needles to acupuncture needles because an acupuncture needle is not hollow like a hypodermic needle and only the width of a cats whisker so is not comparable to the pain that you may have experienced with injections. Acupuncture is a very effective treatment for pain so if you suffer pain for any reason then you must ask yourself if you think acupuncture could possibly be as painful as your disorder!
J Z Bown has treated many people who overcome there needle phobias with her gentle technique

How safe is acupuncture?
Acupuncture needles are sterilized and disposed of after each use. A registered Acupuncturist has been educated in both the human body and safe needling techniques as well as Chinese medical theory to ensure the utmost safety.

What type of schooling do acupuncturists get?
Registered Acupuncturists in BC receive three years of extensive full time training at certified schools. The acupuncturists must then pass a comprehensive exam from the College of TCM Practitioners and Acupuncturists of B.C [CTCMA] to become Licensed. J Z Bown added to her acupuncture and TCM skills by enrolling in a five year programme to become a Doctor of TCM.

What will happen on my first visit?
During your initial exam, a full health history will be taken with questions regarding your health, lifestyle, and any other information necessary for diagnosis. J Z Bown will check your pulses, look at your tongue, and conduct the appropriate physical exam. This information is then organized according to the theories and philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine concluding in a diagnosis that is different to a diagnosis you would find in western medicine. After the interview process, you may receive an acupuncture treatment. This initial visit ranges from 45 to 90 minutes.

What will happen during my treatment?
Where the acupuncture needle has been inserted, you may feel a vague numbness, heaviness, tingling, heat, or dull ache. Sometimes people will experience the sensation of energy spreading from the needle. This is called the "Qi" or energy sensation. All of these reactions are a good sign that the treatment is working. The Qi sensation is important for a successful treatment so when the patient is unaware of a needle being inserted the needle is manipulated by the acupuncturist until a sensation is felt, usually the sensation stops as soon as the manipulation stops but occasionally it will take a few minutes to subside. During treatment, you may feel energized but a feeling of calm and well being is more common.
The needles stay in for about twenty five to thirty minutes and often people will fall asleep during that time.

What will happen after my treatment?
People often experience a sense of deep relaxation, and may sleep a deep sleep the night of the treatment. It's also common for people to feel energized or euphoric.

How many treatments will I need?
six to ten treatments is usual for most conditions, Of course not all conditions nor individuals will respond in the same way or within the same time frame. Some conditions respond immediately, others take longer. The more serious and/or long standing the condition, the more treatments will be needed to show improvement. If a condition is going to respond to acupuncture, it will do so within six treatments.

Will my insurance cover Acupuncture?
Most extended medical benefits provide coverage for acupuncture treatments, including ICBC and WCB claims, and Jes Z Bown Acupuncture also accepts RCMP health care cards. Contact your benefits advisor at work or your insurance provider to learn what types of alternative care are covered and the amount of coverage for each year.
